My page this month is not totally about
Dempsey or cats but I hope you will find it interesting.
Nearly 400 years ago in 1605 a man
called Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in
London.
A group of men led by Robert Gatsby had
plotted to kill King James I of England and Guy Fawkes was a member
of this group. They had bought a house next door to Parliament with
a cellar which went underneath the Parliament building. Guy Fawkes
was given the job of keeping watch over the barrels of gunpowder
which had been placed in the cellar but he was discovered before he
could light the fuse. He was put in prison and tortured until he
told the names of all the people who had been involved in the
Gunpowder Plot.
Guy Fawkes is still remembered today
and on 5th November people make effigies of him. Bonfires are lit
and fireworks are set off all over the Britain. There are large
organised firework displays and small parties held in a family's
back garden or even just one or two fireworks let off in the street.
The fireworks can be very beautiful to see but some explode very
loudly to produce these spectacular effects.
Of course, all this noise is very
disturbing for animals who do not know what is going on. To make the
problem worse, firework parties start from mid-October and continue
way past 5th November. It is not just one evening of noise but can
last for weeks.
Dempsey growls when these bangs start
and is obviously very frightened of all the noise. I have put her
basket in the airing cupboard and left the door open but she prefers
to stay at the top of the staircase. She will not even sit on my lap
- she just does not understand what it is all about.
When I was a child we had a big black
cat called Nimmy (yes, a very unusual name). When the firework
displays began, my father would put Nimmy in the store cupboard
under the stairs. This was not as bad as it sounds because the
cupboard was very big and well lit. My father would put a bed in
there for Nimmy, put down some fresh food and leave the radio
playing then the door was closed so he could not wander out. He was
very happy and comfortable while we were out in the cold air letting
off our fireworks.
Another good reason to keep pets
indoors is that there are some very nasty people about who think it
is fun to torture animals. There have been stories of cats and dogs
having lit fireworks tied to their tails. I would not want that to
happen to Dempsey - nor, in fact, to any animal.
I am sure Dempsey will be relieved when
this is all over and everything gets back to normal. She does like a
peaceful life but 5th November is part of our history and should not
be forgotten. Here is a rhyme which I used to say when I was a child.
"Remember,
remember the fifth of
November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
We see no reason why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot"

Neredeyse 400 yıl önce 1605’te Guy

grup erkek İngiltere Kralı I. James’i öldürmek için komplo
kurmuşlardı ve Guy Fawkes bu grubun üyesi idi. Parlamento’ya komşu
ve mahzeni Parlemento’nun altına uzanan bir ev satın almışlardı. Guy
Fawkes mahzene yerleştirilen barut fıçılarına göz kulak olmakla
sorumluydu ama ateşle yaklaşılmamasını gerektiğini sonradan anladı.
Hapsedildi ve Barut Komplosu’na karışanların isimlerini söyleyene
dek işkence edildi.
Guy Fawkes bugün hala anılır ve 5
Kasım’da insanlar onun görünümüne girerler. Şenlik ateşleri
tutuşturulur ve havai fişekler tüm Britanya’da ateşlenir. Büyük
havai fişek gösterileri düzenlenir ve aileler arka bahçelerinde küçük
partiler yaparlar ya da bir veya iki havai fişek sokak ortasında
ateşlenir. Havai fişekleri izlemek çok güzel olabilir ama bazıları
çok gürültüyle patlar ki muhteşem efekler meydana getirir.
Elbette, bütün bu gürültü ne olduğunu
bilmeyen hayvanlar için çok rahatsız edicidir. Daha da kötüsü,
havai fişek partileri Ekim’in ortasında başlar ve 5 Kasım’a kadar
sürer. Bir akşamlık bir gürültü değildir, haftalar sürebilir.
Dempsey bu patırtılar başladığında
hırlar ve açıkcası bu gürültüden çok korkar. Onun sepetini giysi
kurutma bölmesine koyup kapısını açık bıraksam da o rafların en
tepesinde durmayı tercih eder. Kucağıma bile gelmez – bu olanların
ne için olduğunu bir türlü anlamaz.
Çocukken Nimmy (evet pek sıradışı bir
isim) isminde büyük siyah bir kedimiz vardı. Havai fişek gösterisi
başladığında, babam Nimmy’i merdiven altına koyardı. Bu sesler kadar kötü
değildi. Hem merdiven altı büyük ve rahattı. Babam Nimmy için oraya
bir yatak ve taze mama da koyar, radyoyu da açık bırakırdı. Sonra
kapıyı kapatırdı, böylelikle aklı orda kalmazdı. Babam biz soğuk
havada patlayan havai fişeklerimizle dışarda iken çok mutlu ve
huzurlu olurdu.
Evcil hayvanları evde tutmanın bir
başka iyi yönü de hayvanlara işkence etmenin eğlence olduğunu sanan
çirkin insanlar vardır. Kuyruklarına bağlı havai fişeklerin
ateşlendiği kediler ve köpekler hakkında hikayeler olur. Bunun ne
Dempsey’e ne de başka bir hayvana olmasını istemem.
Eminim Dempsey herşey sona erip de
normale döndüğünde rahatlayacak. O sakin bir yaşam sever ama 5 Kasım
tarihimizin bir parçasıdır ve unutulmamalıdır. İşte küçükken
söylediğim bir dörtlük :
